Five For Friday On a Snowy Saturday

January 23, 2016 1 Comment
Happy snowy Saturday friends!  On a normal snow day I would be looking forward to my blankets accepting me as one of their own and stay under the covers until it was no longer acceptable to.  But, today I feel like being productive while sipping some coffee and taking breaks to stare out at the winter wonderland.  This little guy had some different ideas though…
Before I hunker down and try to channel some creative juices to finally create some new activities for my firsties, I wanted to link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for her Five for Friday linky party!  It was a short but jam-packed week with some great things in and out of the classroom!  Here’s a quick peek into my week.
Just in time for the snowpocalypse of 2016 we kicked off our weather unit of study in science.  We started brainstorming different weather words and then decided to start looking more in depth at snow.  We figured it would be perfect timing for a more in-depth look!
I pride myself on good classroom management.  It is something I have tried to hone for years and feel like I finally have a system that works for me and my students.  Starting last January, I introduced my students to brag tags to help boost self confidence and reignite some excitement for making smart choices.  My kids loved it and so did I.  We will be starting them again next week and I’m so excited.  I set the board up and had so many little friends ask what they were, I didn’t tell them yet so I could build so suspense and excitement.  Next week will be so fun to watch their little faces when they hear about it.

I’ll be using my Operation Character Counts Brag Tags to get us started.  If you’re interested in using brag tags in your classroom you can check out my starter pack in my TpT store by clicking the image below!
Thursday night my husband, brother, sister, and I were treated by my parents to the most amazing Broadway show.  We saw Hamilton and I was completely blown away by the play.  It is a true story of the life of Alexander Hamilton but completely through rap and hip hop.  It was such a unique show and I was mesmerized by the cast and the music.  If you’re able to get to the New York City area anytime soon, I highly recommend the show!

If you’ve read my previous post, you would know that my class was struggling with our independent reading time.  Over the last week, my class and I have been going back to basics and reestablishing our reading stamina.  My kids have reached twelve minutes and I am so proud of them.  We’re no longer looking like little acrobats squirming in our spots during independent reading time!  Go us!

We ended our week with a little Fun Friday action with the help of Miss Giraffe’s Adding 3 Numbers packet of games.  My kids LOVED this Roll and Cover game and I promised them I would be putting more activities like this into our rotation!

I hope everyone is staying safe and warm this weekend and enjoying some time at home.  I am looking forward to more time hiding under blankets and creating some TpT goodies.  Thanks as always for stopping by!
