Over the passed few months I have absolutely loved creating and setting up after nap activities for my toddler.  We have done activities that have ranged from simple fine motor activities to color sorting to beginning alphabet and number recognition.  The common denominator in all of these activities, however, has always been LEARNING THROUGH PLAY!
Now that my daughter is two years old, I wanted to start exposing her to more literacy rich activities where she would engage even more with some of our favorite stories.  Since I am not putting her in formal preschool yet, I wanted the chance to take some of our favorite stories and expand on them to give her more ways to learn and play with these well-loved characters.  That’s how Story and Sensory Activities came to be!
I wanted to create easy to put together, anytime use activities that would go with one of our favorite stories and that could be used over and over again! Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle is one of our absolute favorites and was the perfect choice for our first Story and Sensory Activities. The repeated text and colorful characters were so fun to use to create with.
These activities work on story sequence, color identification, gross motor skills, and fine motor skills.  These four activities can be used over and over again as part of a preschool theme with daily activities or to play with your little ones at home.
The first activity that can be found in the packet is the Brown Bear Picture Story Cards.  These colorful character cards can be used as story sticks for students or little ones to act out the story or place them in sensory bins so your little one can put the characters in order in which they appear in the story.  By gluing them to popsicle sticks your little one can even use them as puppets! I know that Little Miss Toddler will absolutely love using them as puppets and pretending to act as the animals!  I can’t wait to see that.
The Brown Bear Picture Story Mat is something I have yet to try with my little one.  I think that story sequencing may be a little too advanced for her but I think she will still absolutely love placing colorful gems on the matching animal pictures to what she finds in the book.  If your child or students are ready for story sequencing this would be great paired with their favorite manipulatives like mini-erasers, colored gems, rocks, or shells to show when a character is introduced in the story.  This will serve as a powerful visual that’s also hands-on while reading the story or retelling it!
I created these Brown Bear Brown Bear Activities with toddlers and preschoolers in mind.  It’s for that reason that I absolutely LOVE these next two activities.  My little one is getting so good at identifying her colors and she is really beginning to associate other animals and objects with their colors.  This Brown Bear Color Sort Sensory Bin is the perfect way to expand on that practice because she still loves to mix them up and look right at me, almost testing me!  I know seeing the animal pictures and matching them to their color will really help drive this home for her.
Every child needs the opportunity to move their body throughout the day, even just a small chance to get those wiggles out!  But, learning through movement is so powerful and something I want to try and do more of with Little Miss Toddler.  The Brown Bear Color Sort Dice Game will give us the perfect excuse to shake our sillies out and match our colors too!

If you would like to join us and learn through play with the Brown Bear Story and Sensory Activity I am so excited to share that it’s completely FREE for you!  I want these activities to be no stress and used in homes and schools alike.  But, this is entirely new for me!  I have always created for older students so I wanted to share this with you in hopes that you would try it out and tell me what you think!  My hope is to create more Story and Sensory Activities for you based off of your needs.
