A Letter to My Daughter On Her First Birthday

May 30, 2018 No Comments

Charlotte,

I’m sitting in our backyard right now listening to the trees sway in the wind while you’re napping and I have to be honest, I don’t know how we got here.  Since your birth a year ago, so much has changed.

We went from a family of two to a family of three.

We tried to figure out how to become the parents you deserved and needed.

We watched you grow from a sleepy little newborn, to a babbling crawling, smiling, shrieking, almost walking little girl.

We packed up and moved away from our friends and family to make new friends and family.

We have lived in three different homes since you were born just a year ago.

We have stopped working, started working, and stopped working again.

We have grown and changed and continue to do so.

But, the one thing that hasn’t changed from the first moment I held you in my arms was my overwhelming all encompassing love for you.

You are the sweetest gift we could have ever received and I have to pinch myself every day that you get to be ours.

You love to laugh and say hi to strangers and friends.

You love to smile and wave and hug your mom and dad tight, especially when you’re nervous.

You light up a room when you enter it and people can’t wait to meet you.

You have the best little laugh and the biggest and silliest expressions.

You have learned to make mommy laugh by scrunching up your face and tilting it sideways.

You have made your daddy melt into a puddle with every hug and smile.

You have taught us how to slow down and see things through your eyes to find the joy in them again.

You have shown us that change isn’t as scary when you have your loved ones by your side.

On your first birthday sweet girl, I hope you know that you have already made all of our wishes come true so for the rest of your life, we will do our best to grant you all of yours.

We love you always in allways, happy birthday baby girl.
