Tell All Tuesday-Teacher’s Top 10 List!

July 7, 2015 11 Comments
Hello friends!  Happy
Tuesday!  For those of you in Vegas, I hope you are having the time of
your LIFE!  I can’t wait to follow along and live vicariously through you.
I will stop at nothing to get there next year!

For those of us that are at
home let’s have some fun with a new Tell All Tuesday linky party!  My
friend Diana at My Day in K and I are so excited to bring you this
week’s theme; A Teacher’s Top Ten List.

I was and still am a huge
fan of David Letterman.  My favorite part of his show was always, ALWAYS
the top ten list!  So I thought why not think of a Top Ten List for
teachers this week?! Teaching is an extremely stressful and challenging profession
so we deserve to have a little fun! We want you to think about your experience
as a teacher, maybe you just completed your first year or are a seasoned and
experienced professional.  What are the top ten things that teaching has
taught you that you didn’t expect to learn?  Maybe it was some things they
DIDN’T teach you in school and couldn’t learn until you had your own classroom.
Whatever it may be, we can’t wait to hear from you!
  We hope that you
have fun with this like we did!  Here is a mixture of some sweet and
“salty,” things that teaching has taught me!

10.  Patience:  This one does not need much of an explanation.  Without
patience, there is no success.  You have to be patient with a frustrated
student, through endless meetings that you don’t want to attend, and during a
lesson that may not be going according to plan.  Having patience is
essential to good teaching.
9.  To scarf food
down:
  Most teachers are
working while eating their lunch. Surprised?  I know I was too!  I
thought I would at least have an hour for lunch.  Need more than a half
hour to eat?  Not going to happen! I can thank teaching for making me a
much faster eater!

8.  Bladder control: In any other profession you can wander to the bathroom whenever
you please.  When you’re the only adult in a room full of 20 children?
The bathroom trips must be scheduled and pre-planned.  I only hope
you have a teacher next door that you can yell to in a pinch who will cover
your class when you just can’t wait any longer!

7.  There are not
enough hours in the day:
There’s just never NOT ever enough time in the
day to get everything accomplished that you want to.  Some nights I can
grade papers at home while others, it’s just not practical.  Set a
schedule for yourself and stick to it.  It helps!
6.  To plan, plan, and
plan some more:
Some days your lesson plan does not go how you
expected it to and you need a back-up plan.  Other days your back-up plan
needs a back-up plan.  Kids just aren’t getting the math lesson?
 Enter back-up plan!

5.  To appreciate
thrifty deals:
Ever heard of the Target
Dollar Spot?!  I know, of course you have!  You’ve probably been
there multiple times this week.  It is a teacher heaven!  Teaching
has also taught me to appreciate any and all garage sales, estate sales, and
flea markets!
4.  Coffee is ALWAYS a
good idea:
There’s no explanation needed for this one.
 Coffee trumps all others.
3.  To get
creative:
You see an old DVD
case?  I see a reusable white board. You see binder clips?  I see
labels.  Teaching has taught me to see regular objects in a completely new
way!  I’m always figuring out ways to use any old thing!
2.  Everyone deserves the chance to learn: YES, everyone!
1.  Kids who are
labeled the most “difficult,” are usually the ones who need the most
love:
 There have been many
times in my teaching career where “that kid” was placed in my
classroom.  Were they challenging?  Absolutely.  But, every time
I find that when I connect with them and show them that they are loved and cared
for, the rest of their behaviors are inconsequential.
I think this quote says it all for me as a teacher.

Do you have similar things
that you have learned in your teaching career?  Are some of your take
aways different?  We’d love to hear your thoughts!  If you’d like to
share your Teaching Top Ten List, grab the image below, open it up in
powerpoint, and write down your thoughts!  Share it in a blog post and
linkup with us below!

Thank you for stopping by!

I love all of your teaching lessons, they are such great pieces of advice! I can't agree more about learning to scarf down food! Whenever I'm out eating at a restaurant I have to remind myself to slow down because I have more than 30 minutes!
Thank you so much for hosting such a fun linky!

Ha! I couldn't agree more with the coffee. I couldn't even function without it. Love when all those Starbucks cards start to roll in from the students. It doesn't take long to figure out the more caffeinated I am, the more fun I am! šŸ™‚ Great linky party, thanks for hosting!!

    Hi Jayme!
Bladder control is a must. When I'm on a long car ride I have to remind myself that I'm a teacher and I can do this šŸ™‚

Great list, Jayme! I have to remind myself at dinner to slow down while I eat because I'm so used to eating on the run during the day! Those 'difficult' kids always end up being my favorite, too. šŸ™‚

Great list, Jayme! I agree with the "difficult" students part. They really do need a little extra love. This was a great post and idea!

  • MyDayinK July 8, 2015 at 12:15 pm

Yes, yes, yes! Your list was so true. Patience is a must and I couldn't agree more about the most difficult being the ones who need the most love! Your kiddos are lucky to have you. Your list was great!

Love it all, Jayme! Especially the thrifty finds šŸ™‚ I am queen of the dollar spot, lol! You just have to be or else you will be broke! Love #1 too, you always have one or two in every class that warm up after giving them that love they need. Enjoy your summer, Jayme!
