Traveling with kids can often feel like a whirlwind of chaos, especially when trying to keep their little hands and minds busy. Whether you’re embarking on a road trip, flying high in the sky, or enjoying a dinner out, it’s important to have a few screen-free activities and toys to keep the little ones entertained.

Let’s dive into some engaging options that will spark joy and connection during your adventures!  All of our favorite toys and activities for on the go are linked in my Amazon storefront here

1. Creative Art Kits

Pack lightweight art supplies such as coloring books, washable markers, or travel-sized watercolor sets. Not only are these great for expressing creativity, but they also provide a calming activity. Kids can create masterpieces while you enjoy a peaceful moment in the car or at the restaurant. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to practice fine motor skills!

2. Magnetic Playsets

Magnetic playsets come in a variety of themes—be it dinosaurs, princesses, or outer space. They are compact, easy to store, and keep kids engaged as they build and play without the worry of losing small pieces (thanks to the magnets!). These sets can easily fit in a diaper bag or backpack, making them a perfect travel companion.

3.  Travel Games

Classic games like travel bingo, card games, or even a mini checkers set can be a hit. They offer endless fun while also encouraging a little friendly competition. You can even create custom bingo cards featuring sights you might see along the way—making it a fun way to explore your surroundings together.

4. Puzzle Books

Puzzle books filled with crosswords, sudoku, or mazes are not only engaging but educational too! They stimulate critical thinking and are perfect for those moments where kids need to sit quietly. Just make sure to include a colorful set of pencils for added fun!

 5. Story time on the Go

While we’re focusing on screen-free options, audiobooks or storytelling sessions can be an engaging way to pass the time. Choose captivating stories that can engage the entire family, and everyone can take part in bringing the characters to life, even without visuals.  We love to bring our Yoto player or even just listen to podcasts and audiobooks on both Spotify and Audible.

6. Snack Time Games

Food can be fun! Turn snack time into an activity by packing bite-sized snacks that can be sorted, counted, or even used for simple games. Think of arranging the snacks in patterns or even a little guessing game where kids can identify flavors. Not only does this nourish their bodies, but it also keeps their minds active.

7. DIY Travel Journals

Before you head out, create simple travel journals for your kids that they can decorate with stickers and drawings. They can jot down their thoughts, sketches of their surroundings, and any fun activities they do along the way. This promotes writing skills and provides a wonderful keepsake to look back on after the trip.

8.  Fidget Toys

Fidget toys especially for toddlers are essential and so popular right now.  They are easy to bring on the go and can entertain your little ones for longer than you would think!  Here is a link to some of our favorites!

Final Thoughts

Traveling can be one of the greatest joys for families, and keeping your little ones entertained is key to a smooth journey. By packing these screen-free activities and toys, you not only foster creativity and engagement but also create meaningful bonding moments. So, as you prepare for your next adventure, remember that the journey can be just as fun as the destination. Safe travels, and happy exploring!
